Gensan's Acharon is League Of Cities' VP-Mindanao

GENSAN CITY: MAYOR Pedro Acharon, Jr. was elected Vice-President for Mindanao comprising the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) National Executive Board during its 51st General Assembly in Manila over the weekend.

Acharon joined four other vice-presidents who will be serving a three-year term from 2007 to 2010.

Representing the NCR is Mayor Ma. Lourdes Fernando of Marikina City, Luzon is Mayor Amadeo Perez of Urdaneta City; and the Visayas is Mayor Hector Villanueva of Bais City.

In closed ballot proceedings, elected Chairman of the Board was Mayor Jerry TreƱas of Iloilo City with Mayor Evelio Leonardia of Bacolod City taking the Vice Chair slot.

Meanwhile, Mayor Benhur Abalos, Jr. of Mandaluyong City won as LCP President while mayors Alfonso Casurra of Surigao and Senen Sarmiento of Calbayog took the Executive Vice President and Secretary General seats respectively.

The League of Cities of the Philippines is a non-profit organization and is not a government agency. It has a membership of 118 cities.

The organization was formed to help coordinate efforts to improve governance and local autonomy and to tackle issues such as preserving the environment and improving public works.
