City Health warns public against buying unsafe toys

OZAMIZ CITY: The City Health Office (CHO), here, issued its warning against buying plastic toys, which may be hazardous to children.

CHO’s warning came in view of concerns raised regarding children’s toys that contain heavy metals.

These metals, leach out from the toys, said CHO, and when sucked or chewed by children or infants, bring harm, Health Officer Daniel Medina said

Parents are enjoined to check package and ingredient labels when buying toys; to read the precautions and give children the utmost adult supervision when playing with it, Medina advised.

Medina added that children two years old should avoid playing with balls less than 1.75 in diameter size so as to prevent from choking when swallowed.

Toys that easily break into small parts or pieces, toys made of glass or brittle plastics and those containing small detachable parts, should be kept away, the doctor added.

Include those toys with sharp points and edges and with electrical parts that could pinch or entrap fingers, toes or hair and those put together by straight pins, sharp wires or nails that are exposed and easily detached, Medina concluded.(WITH REPORTS FROM PIA)
