BAS notes ample crops in Zampen in October

PAGADIAN CITY: There was abundance for the region in terms of crop and yield in October, a new BAS monthly agricultural situation report on Zampen said.

The report said that only there was only an initial crop damage of palay in Zamboanga due to heavy rains and flash flood, including their corn farmers.

All of October, harvesting of corn in some parts of Mampang, Mercedes and Ayala Districts was noted while about ten hectares of palay were harvested in Villahermosa and Isis Polanco in Zambonorte.

Irrigated palay areas in some barangays of Dipolog City, Katipunan and Polanco were reported to be into land preparation activities.

In Zambosibugay, the harvesting of irrigated and rainfed palay areas was noted but due to sufficient water supply, land preparation was already started in some irrigated areas that were harvested earlier.

In Zamboanga City, there was sufficient supply of marine products despite the bad weather condition in the early part of October while Zambonorte reported lesser supply of fish due to rough seas.

Zambosur fish production increased last month due to good weather condition as it was the peak season for some species like frigate tuna, eastern little tuna, anchovies, yellow fin tuna and sardines.

As to fruits and vegetables, Zambonorte boasts of ample supply of mango, ampalaya, eggplant as ginger in Dipolog City Public Market was minimal and the price of rubber cup lump decreased.

In Zambosibugay, price of seaweed decreased, according to BFAR, due to impurities or the over usage of salt material mixed in dried seaweed to make it appear heavier during weighing and low quality of products due to usage of fertilizers during cultivation period.

Still in Sibugay, there was a low supply of fruits in the market but with high retail prices.
