Pagadian to embark on tissue-cultured Lacatan propagation

MAYOR Samuel Co last week said he wants to replicate Misamis Occidental’s success story on tissue cultured banana propagation with the opening of this city’s Tissue Culture Laboratory and Farmer’s Training Center in Brgy. Macasing.

Tissue culture, as its name suggests, means cloning and micro-propagation of tissues of selected banana plant variety and daughter suckers.

This process, according to Co, will be tried on the Lacatan banana variety inside the tissue culture laboratory using micro-climatic conditions and care.

Also, trainings in application, preparation and planting related to the Lacatan banana as well as other crops will be initiated by batches and clustered barangays in the said center.

During the launching and blessing of the said laboratory last Sept. 29, the mayor articulated his hope for village farmers to experience increased productivity in banana propagation, which will eventually result in farmers selling their produce to buyers in Visayas and Luzon.

Co explained that it has been his dream to make Pagadian City as a food producing agri-based economy and contribute more to the positive performance of the banana market.

Moreover, in the said activity attended by several village officials, the mayor likewise distributed free corms to them.

“Once Makita nila ang produkto, dili na magproblema and mga mag-uuma sa pagpalapnag niini,” Co said, adding Pagadian is endowed with rich soils and there’s no reason for farmers not to till and plant banana.

“Kita tanan magtinabangay ta ug atong itulod ang pagpananom og saging kay basig mao ra ni makahatag nato ug dugang kinitaan,” he added.

A Regional Development Council report obtained by this paper stated that banana came second to abaca in 2008 with 253,582.38 metric tons. Of the three provinces of Zamboanga Peninsula, Zambosur followed Zamboanga City in banana production with 46,545.90 metric tons.

The trade and industry department lists Dimataling, Midsalip, Tabina and Pitogo as the top banana-producing municipalities of Zambosur.
