SIX Zambosur towns were identified as proposed expansion areas for the Philippine Environment Governance Project Phase 2 (EcoGov 2) where “scaling up activities” will be conducted starting this year until 2011, the last stretch of the EcoGov project in partnership with the Provincial Government and DENR.
The Salug Valley Development Council-Provincial Management Office (SVDC-PMO) identified the six municipalities as Midsalip, Tambulig, Bayog, Tigbao, Kumalarang, and Labangan.
These towns will be given technical assistance by EcoGov 2 in improving the management of their forest and forestlands, coastal resources and solid waste management.
SVDC-PMO’s Rewel Galo also added that Dumingag, Mahayag, Sominot and Lakewood have earlier completed its respective activity modules in community and watershed profiling and mapping, and the preparation of their Municipal Forest Land Use Plans (FLUP).
Based on the data categorization conducted by the regional office of DENR, Midsalip is listed as having the biggest timberland or forestland areas with 11,393 hectares while Labangan registers the lowest with only 2,000.
Executive Order No. 318, which directs promotion of sustainable forest management in the country, mandates local government units to incorporate FLUPS in their comprehensive land use plans.
To date, the Provincial Development Council has already filed a resolution endorsing and requesting DENR Sec. Lito Atienza to approve the inclusion of the mentioned towns in EcoGov 2.
For her part, Gov. Aurora Cerilles praised EcoGov’s commendable feat in forging strong alliance and collaboration with various line agencies and other concerned groups.
“I say with pride that indeed you have done a great job and your accomplishments will stand as an enduring testament in the continuing quest for environmental management, preservation and management,” the governor said.
