DENR leads Arbor Day tree-planting

June 25 was “Arbor Day” and government employees, socio-civic organizations, the academe, NGOs and other concerned citizens celebrated the day with a tree-planting.

The activity is one of the highlights of the celebration of the Environment Month with the theme: “Kalikasan ating Yaman, Alagaan,” which underscores the importance of conserving trees, a press release forwarded to this paper said.

The DENR planted trees along the highways in Navalan, Tukuran, to Brgy. Buenavista, this city.

CENRO Dr. Adelaida Borja said 3,650 seedlings of Mahogany trees were planted.

“There is a need to improve the city’s environmental condition by planting trees in national, provincial, municipal or barangay roads and other open public spaces,” Borja said.

Tree guards were likewise provided by government employees to make sure the trees grow unharmed by weather and animals.

Borja thanked the participating agencies for their support in the activity undertaken by DENR during the Philippine Environment Month celebration.

The celebration culminated last Monday at the office of DENR regional executive director Ernesto Adobo Jr. PIA-RO9
