Labangan green thumbs covet National Gawad Saka ‘09

EMPHASIZING the replicated achievements of Zamboanga del Sur in the National Gawad Saka Award 2009, Department of Agriculture (DA) regional executive director Oscar Parawan disclosed that for this year, the same was coveted by Labangan.

It’s the second time around when the national winners for the Gawad Saka search came from Labangan, Parawan added during DA’s Regional Management Committee (RMC) meeting last Oct. 8.

The outstanding agricultural achievers are Bonifacio Corpuz of Dalapang for the Rice category while couple Reynaldo and Anita Montanez and family of Lower Pulacan were chosen in the Farm Family category.

The two winners will each receive cash reward of P100,000 and plaques of recognition.

Gawad Saka is DA’s yearly program of giving due recognition to individuals and institutions whose exemplary accomplishments in agriculture and fisheries are deemed worthy of emulation.

Parawan explains this quest for outstanding farmers nationwide is to acknowledge farmers’ contribution to the attainment of national food security goal of the national government.

It was learned that since 2007, the Zamboanga Peninsula Region is a prominent Gawad Saka frontrunner, holding a record of at least two awards each year.

“Let’s us keep it up and continue to harvest more awards,” Parawan said, adding Labangan is a consistent Gawad Saka winner taking into account that for 2008, the outstanding livestock farmer honored by DA was from Labangan too.

On Oct. 15, Parawan will accompany the winners in the awarding ceremonies to be held in Malacañang Palace along with Labangan municipal agriculturist Henry Failma and this province’s Gawad Saka coordinators.
