PAGADIAN CITY--The provincial office of the National Statistics Office (NSO) held a four-day training for its field personnel on the conduct of 2008 Functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS), Nov. 17-20.
November is FLEMMS month for the NSO.
FLEMMS aims to gather data on basic and functional literacy rates and educational skills qualifications of the population. This year is the fourth national survey of this kind by NSO.
Provincial statistics officer Josette Abdurahim and statistician Gregorio QuiƱo facilitated the said training.
During the training, NSO OIC regional director Expedito Rebollos also gave a brief overview of FLEMMS, encouraging the field officers to be diligent and honest in conducting the survey.
The said field officers will gather provincial samples of households through visitations and interviews or using self-administered questionnaires inquiring about the household’s demographic characteristics, literacy and education, employment and household characteristics and amenities.
The data gathered will be the basis for implementing interventions in illiteracy programs, especially in depressed and under-served areas.
This year’s FLEMMS is a collaboration of NSO, DepEd and the Literacy Coordinating Council.
