LABANGAN, ZAMBOSUR— Four rebel returnees who decided to go back to the fold of the law recently received their firearms cash compensation as Special Fund Assistance (SFA).
Brigader General Jovencio Magalso, who represented MGen Nehemias Pajarito, commanding general of the 1st Infantry (Tabak) Division, led the turnover of the fund assistance along with that of three other soldiers and a CAFGU Active Auxiliary (CAA).
The awarding ceremony was held at the Tabak Division grandstand last Monday, Nov. 24.
The four rebel returnees belong to the Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee who voluntarily surrendered to the military and take advantage of the benefits offered in the Balik-Baril Program.
Magalso named the surrenderees as Nilo Gumilid alias Judy, Eduardo Lomoljo alias Jerson, Jaime Maminsag alias Jimboy and Oscar Mangruban aka Ryan.
The Gumilid, Lomoljo and Maminsag were said to be rebel soldiers operating in the hinterlands of Tudela, Sinacaban, Jimenez, Don Victoriano, Calamba and Clarin, all of Misamis Occidental.
Mangruban was said to be an errand boy, tasked to collect foodstuffs from residents in Tangub City and Bonifacio, Misamis Occidental.
They surrendered with their assorted high-powered firearms: five M16s and three M14 rifle and a M203 grenade launcher and received a total cash assistance of P146,000.
“Thank you for hearing the call of the government for laying our arms and joining us. We believe that this is a great help for you to begin a new life, a life away from the hostilities of the CPP-NPA,” Magalso told the four.
“There is still life in the mainstream of society,” he assured them.
Meanwhile, a cash assistance of P50,000 each was given to 2Lt Ian Justen Sagario of the 15IB, PFC Philip Larese of the 10IB while PFC Julhalin Ibba of the 32IB received P100,000.
The three were wounded in the line of duty.
Rogelyn Zusima, widow of CAA Francisco Zusima of the 5th Infantry CADRE Batallion who also died in an encounter in Kaslanugas, Lanao del Sur last September, received P250,000 from the SFA for killed in action (KIA).
It was learned that the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process under the Social Integration Program is set to implement the increase of the benefits of rebel returnees by December, this year.
