When we talk about Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) plan implementation and validation of weight among pre-school children, Zamboanga del Sur easily gets flying colors.

In terms of efficiency and program impact, the province is number one and leads in the 2008 Regional Level Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Program Implementation (MELLPI) in Nutrition.

This achievement elated Gov. Aurora Cerilles after Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Estrella Esma reported these all to to the governor recently.

Cerilles cited MELLPI’s good efforts during the quarterly meeting of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) and Accelerated Hunger Mitigating Program, which was presided by DOH Regional Director Aristedes Tan.

Cerilles said MELLPI defines the degree of effectiveness of the local government unit in implementing nutrition program.

The governor, who also chairs the Provincial Nutrition Council (PNC), credited this achievement to the dedication of all the BNS for contributing to the province’s nutrition perspectives.

Esma then disclosed that the province gets 91.23 percent in the regional ranking with four of its towns among the top ten. These are Margosatubig, Dinas, Mahayag and Vincenzo Sagun.

Cerilles noted that would-be mothers should give attention to highlighting proper health and good nutrition before, during and after pregnancy for their own health and their baby’s.

The governor recommended that strategies on nutrition should be refocused on concerns that demand urgency, hoping that such approaches will help reduce the high maternal mortality rate of the province.
