RTC judge affirms ruling on Romeo Jalosjos poll case

IPIL, ZAMBO SIBUGAY—The Regional Trial Court (RTC) has affirmed the ruling of the First Municipal Trial Court in Cities (MCTC) pertaining to the Election Case filed against brothers Romeo Masupil Jalosjos Jr. and Rommel Apolinario Jalosjos.

The case mentioned is for the judicial exclusion of the Jalosjos brothers from the certified list and book of voters of precinct number 0051F of Barangay Veterans Village in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

The said election case was filed by Dan Erasmo Sr., punong barangay of Veterans Village at the MCTC in Ipil, Tungawan through Presiding Judge Arthur Ventura.

Based on court records, the MCTC decided on the two election cases last Aug. 14 in favor of Erasmo and on account of the respondents’ failure to possess the residency requirement set by the constitution and RA 8189, the Voter’s Registration Act of 1996.

In his penned decision, Ventura ordered the Election Registration Board of Ipil to exclude the name of Romeo Jalosjos as a registered voter of precinct number 0051F of Barangay Veterans Village, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Romeo is the incumbent mayor of Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte while Rommel is said to be eyeing the gubernatorial post of Zamboanga Sibugay.

Moreover, in Ventura’s decision, the exclusion of Rommel Jalosjos in the certified list and book of voters of the same precinct was denied.

It can be recalled that Erasmo filed his first appeal to RTC Branch 24 in Ipil but Presiding Judge Reubin Lo. Maraon inhibited himself from handling the case, being the former counsel of the Jalosjos family, so the case was forwarded to the office of the Clerk of Court, RTC Pagadian City last Sept. 1.

The case was raffled and went to the special election court under Judge Anecito Galon Jr. who affirmed, Sept. 11, the prior decision of the MCTC.

Section 18 of RA 8189 allows any voter, candidate or representative of a registered political party to challenge in writing any application for registration, stating the grounds there for.

To recall, last April, former Zamboanga Del Norte Rep. Romeo “Nonong” Jalosjos and son, Rommel , along with younger brother, 3rd District Rep. Cesar Jalosjos, conducted a series of visitations of the different towns of Zamboanga Sibugay, including Ipil.

The former congressman told journalists then in an interview that since he can not run for public office, he will instead give his full support to his son, Rommel, “to lead the people of Zamboanga Sibugay.”

Jalosjos explained that Rommel “will focus on and dedicate his leadership to infrastructure projects for the people especially in the barangays.”
