DTI bats for consumer vigilance, awareness

THE provincial office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said it will continue to promote consumer awareness as part of its advocacy in the observance of October as Consumer Welfare Month.

The annual celebration is in pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1098 dated Sept. 26, 1997 declaring the month of October of every year as Consumer Welfare Month.

In a visit at her office, Tuesday, Marichu Malate-Atay, provincial director, said this year’s event carries the theme: “Generic Drugs, Gawang Pinoy, Galing Pinoy, Tangkilikin Natin.”

She explained that the theme is based on the national government’s policy to protect public health and adopt appropriate measures to promote and ensure access to affordable quality drugs and medicines for all.

Atay stated that for the whole month, DTI will intensify the monitoring of prices of drugs and basic commodities and products around Pagadian that are included in their mandatory weekly inspection.

A Kapihan radio forum was earlier held followed by the search for cleanest restaurant, carenderia and bakeries participated in by members of the local consumer group Pagadian City Consumers Association.

For the whole month, the DTI will conduct other advocacies like the Operation Timbangan, halal consumer advocacy, drugstore monitoring for generic drugs and commodities.

Atay added that DTI’s public awareness on consumer rights, responsibilities and education campaign will enlist the help of the media through information drives and public forums with consumer groups and enterpreneurs.

She said she hopes that through the month-long observance, their office will be able to make consumers become a well informed and vigilant.
