Floodwaters swamp Tambulig villages

TAMBULIG, ZAMBOSUR—Heavy rains brought about by typhoon Ising and Jolina the past two weeks caused riverbanks to overflow and flood San Jose, Lower Usugan and Kapalaran, this town.

The flood consequently destroyed 1,000 hectares of ricefields, Provincial Agricultural Coordinator Carlito Larubis and DA Chief of Crops Alex Pulmano said.

The affected areas, according to them were swamped with water and that roads leading to the damaged riverbanks were impassable.

Punong Barangay Algerica Helaga of Kapalaran recalls its has been two years since they stopped farming because of the unrepaired river banks, which has reached 92 meters in length.

To recall, some 1,485 families from 41 villages were displaced when Salug Valley was hit by a flashflood on October, last year.

The families came from Dumingag, Mahayag, Molave, and Ramon Magsaysay, whose ricefarms, vegetations, livestocks and houses were either destroyed or washed away by flood.

The flashflood also hit Tambulig after the Usugan River overflowed and inundated villages near its riverbanks.

DENR’s geohazard mapping and assessment listed 41 towns in Zamboanga del Sur as danger zones vulnerable to disasters such as landslides, flashfloods, liquefaction and other natural disasters.
