ILIGAN CITY—The National Transmission Corporation (TransCo) announced it has delivered a total of 84,425.3 MegaWatt-months of power to the country's major electricity grids in the first nine months of 2008.
In a press release sent to MINDANAO MONITOR last week, Transco said that they achieved a 2.7 percent increase compared to last year’s 82,179.4 MW-months.
Power delivery, measured in MW-months, refers to the sum of TransCo's monthly billing demands to its customers for a one-year rolling average demand.
With the forthcoming privatization of transmission grid operations, TransCo asserts it will expand its facilities to address the power demands of customers and improve system reliability and security.
In the Visayas, a biggest percent increase was noted, posting 9,614.9 MW-months or 6.4 percent above than 2007’s 9,034.2 MW-months.
Distribution utilities in Central Negros Electric Cooperative (CENECO), Negros Oriental II Electric Cooperative (NORECO II) and VRC Rural Service Electric Cooperative (VRESCO) placed a 7.2 percent growth in requirements.
Also contributing to the increase in power delivery are the Mactan 1 Export Processing Zone (MEPZ-1) and Cebu III Electric Cooperative, consuming an additional 170 MW-months.
New industrial customers SC Global Coco Products Inc. and Carmen Copper Corp. put in an additional load of 37.7 MW-months.
Transco said the 10 MW transfer capacity in the Leyte-Cebu submarine cables attributed in the increase in power delivery to the greater supply in the Visayas grid.
An additional 15 MW modular generator sets were also installed in Panay in the middle of the year.
Meanwhile, power delivered to the Luzon grid reached 62,671.5 MW-months, a 2.0 percent increase from the 2007 level of 61,467.9 MW-months.
Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), Transco’s largest customer, which accounts for 74 percent of TransCo's total delivery, placed 46,135.1 MW-months, a 1.4 percent rise than last year’s level.
In the Mindanao grid, power delivery reached 12,138.8 MW-months, reflecting an increase of 3.9 percent over the year ago level of 11,677.3 MW-months.
Electricity wheeled to distribution utilities grew by 3.5 percent or by 329.1 MW-months and to industrial customers by 6.1 percent or by 134.5 MW-months.
Major contributors to the rise in demand were Davao Light and Power Corp. Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative, South Cotabato Electric Cooperative, Cagayan Electric Power and Light Co. as well as steel and chemical manufacturing companies. WITH RIC CLET
