Twenty-one new policemen were added to the local PNP force after the city government requested for augmentation of its police force in preparation of the upcoming full swing of the transfer of all regional offices from Zamboanga City.

The additional police strength follows the resolution approved during the joint Regional Development Council-9 and Regional Peace and Order Council-9 meeting last February 18.

Mayor Samuel Co said he was grateful to PNP Provincial Director P/SSupt, Ramon Ochotorena for granting his request of detailing additional policemen in the city proper.

Co said he merely wanted that standard police to population ratio be followed in the city, at least one for every one hundred residents, enough for securing the new regional center of Zamboanga Peninsula 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Of the new policemen, 20 were new graduates and non-officers, headed by one Police Officer graduate of PNPA Class 2008.

They were all presented by Ochotorena to Co, who in turn assured the new policemen of his all out support in their line of duties.

“I want you to perform your duties and responsibilities with discipline,” Co reminded the new policemen.

“Chose your friends well, be acquainted as to who are those involved in illicit activities and those who are police characters, distance your self from them kay kung masabit na ni sila moduol ni sila sa inyoha, mangayo ug tabang hangtod nga dili naka makalikay ug maapil na hinoon ka. The policeman should always be above all lawless elements,” the mayor then advised.

It was learned that one policeman will protect 1,121 residents in Pagadian and throughout the province; the ratio is one policeman for every 1,600 people.

Ochotorena, in a huddle with MINDANAO MONITOR, said the downloading of more policemen in the city is long overdue.

“The downloading may be in trickles but I promised the mayor that I will see to it that the ratio of police to population is achieved,” the police director said.

He assured the new policemen have passed the integrated transformation program of the PNP, complete with police basic course, seminars and orientations.

I told them to always give courtesy and be disciplined.

It can be recalled that Co pointed out that the number of Pagadian policemen still remained at 100 ever since 2000 in spite of the ever increasing population.
