City finances NFA rice, sells cheaply

Some P800,000 is being allocated by the city government for the purchase of 500 sacks of NFA rice for daily distribution to all the barangays here through the LGU rolling store, Mayor Samuel Co said last week.

Co said he sees the need to flood the 54 villages with government-subsidized rice at only P18 per kilo, minus the .25 centavos “aron dili na magka-problema sa sensilyo.”

Through this scheme, NFA rice will be distributed at five kilos per beneficiary.

Co said this idea was decided upon because the NFA will not release its deliveries “without cash” and besides that, the NFA doesn’t have enough manpower to flood the NFA rice in the city.

Three rolling stores manned by 30 personnel to contain the increase of NFA rice deliveries from supposedly 5,000 to 15,000 a month.

Two of the rolling stores will be distributing to the “poorest of the poor” to urban barangays daily while one rolling store is assigned to do rounds to the rural barangays.

“This system of distribution will make it easy for village residents in buying cheap rice,” Co justified.

The mayor added that the said scheme is good until supplies last, until the next harvest season.

“And by that time we are hoping that the price of commercial rice will normalize,” Co said.
