OZAMIZ CITY: The petite and dazzling Maria Edna Charise Quiño Godoy, who once took Tangub and Ozamiz cities by storm with her tendon-breaking skills in tennis, has been cited recently in the prestigious TOWER awards.

TOWER stands for “The Outstanding Work Exemplars Award,” and is given annually by the local government to its commendable residents.

The awarding ceremony was also one of the highlights of the celebration of this city’s 59th charter anniversary.

Godoy is presently a nursing senior enrolled at Misamis University. She took her two years of schooling in California State University, Los Angeles, California, USA.

Born on March 16, 1984, she is the daughter of parents Jovencio Godoy Jr. of DXOC Radyo Pilipino and Chief Probation and Parole Officer Edna Q. Godoy of the Pagadian City Parole and Probation Office.

Dubbed the “Wonder Girl,” Charise was a member of the Philippine Women’s National Tennis Team and a second placer in the National Women’s Division. In 2002, she was cited “United Athletic Association of the Phils (UAAP) Most Valuable Player” for Women’s Tennis.

A persistent gold medalist in Palarong Pampook Region-X and Palarong Pambansa during her early years, she ruled almost all juniors tournaments anywhere in the country including Milo, Head, Penn, Wilson, Alibor, Adidas, K-Swiss Juniors, Manzano Cup, Gullas Cup and other Philta-sponsored tournaments where she typically emerged as predestined Champion or Runner-Up.

Her winning streaks endeared her to national and local dailies here and abroad.

She once played at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) during her brief schooling in Manila where she took over the No. 1 singles and doubles position. She anchored the team’s championship campaign as UST went on to become the 2002 UAAP Women’s Tennis Champion.

Her stint abroad was considered to have contributed immensely to California State University, L.A’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 1998 leading to their CCAA Runner-Up Title, marking the best CCAA finish of the Golden Eagle Tennis Team in program history.

In 2005, Charise become the recipient of the Dr. Hal Charnofsky Memorial Award for becoming the “Most Inspirational Scholar-Athlete of the Year” at the California State University, L.A.

The award is presented annually to deserving student-athletes who best demonstrate the ability to achieve both academic and athletic excellence.

Making it doubly special, according to her father, was the fact that she was a foreign student-athlete surviving on her own in her studies and athletic efforts in a foreign country.

Chosen as Women’s Tennis Player of the Week by the California Collegiate Athletic Association and sponsored by Wilson Sporting Goods on February 24, 2003 after doing a combined 6-0 in singles and doubles at the Dominican, Sonoma State and San Francisco State, USA.

She bagged the award after playing her first few months as an athletic scholar and as a member of the Golden Eagle Varsity Team of the California State University in Los Angeles, U.S.A.

Again, she was chosen for two consecutive weeks as California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Tennis Player of the Week sponsored by Wilson Sporting Goods on March 1 and 15, 2004, respectively, for exemplary playing which is a rare feat.
