OZAMIZ CITY—For former city vice mayor Elvria Tan, the computerized tax collection initiated by BIR-Revenue District 100 is a welcome and long-awaited move.

Tan, who is now the regional governor of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Mindanao-10, told journalists in an interview: “Nagpasalamat ko nga miabot sa computerization program dinhi sa atong area, specifically in Ozamiz City.”

The former city official was among the businessmen-guest of BIR’s launching program called in last Nov. 28 regarding the Nationwide Rollout of Computerized Systems (NCRS) program at their office.

The extensive rollout of computerized systems in 75 non-computerized RDOs in the country is aimed in improving tax collection, provide better service to taxpayers and deter evasion of taxes.

The said move centers on the computerization program of the BIR in registration, collection, returns processing and taxpayer account processes through its comprehensive data bank.

At present, out of the 119 BIR revenue district offices, there are only 44 are computerized, dubbed as Integrated Tax System (ITS) sites and these are concentrated in Manila and Cebu area.

Soon, a revenue data center will be set up in Mindanao.

“Nindot kaayo ni kay ma-tap na nato ang tanang mga taxpayers and payments are really seen ug transparent na ang operation. Hinaut pa unta that everyone will participate in this program,” Tan added.

“Businessmen will not have that same complaint again kay unsay imong gibayad nakaprogram na man. Niini, dili naka ma-penalty kay makit-an man gyod ka didto sa computer,” she explained.

Also present during the launching ceremonies were USAID CTO Carlos Gavino, MCA-PTP-TAP Chief of party Phyllis Cox, BIR Assistant Commissioner Ma. Rosario Charo Curiba, RR-16 ARD Alberto Olasiman, Taxpayers Assistance Service HREA Marilou del Rosario and Judith Pacana, BIR Ozamiz RD-100 revenue district officer.

Gavino, in a huddle with the media said that NCRS makes tax collection and registrations more efficient for the BIR since its will monitor everything, including the discrepancies in the collection amount.

“There is a need to increase tax collection in Ozamiz para maibalik naman sa tao yong pera nila through services,” he said.

The Millenium Challenge Account-Philippines Threshold Program Technical Assistance Project (MCA-PTP TAP) supports the procurement and training of BIR personnel, a BIR briefer handed to media said.

MCA-PTP TAP is assisting the government improve revenue administration and fight corruption through a US$20.6 million grant from the Millenium Challenge Corp., administered by the USAID.

By January, next year, computers, printers, filing cabinets and computer tables, chairs will have arrived and the required electrical updates and local area network cabling finished.
